CHIC Breed Certificate Requirements

The CHIC Breed Certificate program is a partnership between SCOA and the OFA to establish a recommended protocol for breed specific health screenings to indicate a goal of achieving basic Spinone testing.

A CHIC certificate earned reflects a breeder’s/owner’s commitment to health for our breed as well as participating in open honest sharing of Spinone Health Data.

All Spinone participating in the CHIC program must be permanently identified via a microchip or tattoo.

The following test requirements are determined by SCOA as the CHIC Spinone Breed Requirements

Eye Examination by a boarded ACVO Ophthalmologist- Recommend annual exams beginning at 1 year of age
Results registered with OFA

Hip Dysplasia (One of the following after the age of 2 years)
OFA Evaluation
PennHIP Evaluation
British Veterinary Association (BVA) Evaluation

Elbow Dysplasia (One of the following after the age of 2 years)
OFA Evaluation
British Veterinary Association (BVA) Evaluation

Autoimmune thyroiditis (Optional)
OFA evaluation from an approved laboratory - yearly screening recommended until age 6, every two years after that until age 10

Cardiac Evaluation (Optional-exams beginning at 1 year of age)
Congenital Cardiac Exam
Advanced Cardiac Exam

Through completion of the CHIC protocol (eyes, hips and elbows), and agreeing to have all tests results posted on the OFA Database, a CHIC number and certificate is awarded to that Spinone.

Obtaining a CHIC certificate only indicates that the requirements have been met and does not indicate normal results of each of the tests completed.

Foreign tested dogs can obtain a CHIC certificate but must contact the OFA to discuss and present their current testing certificates.
