Report From the West Coast Spinone Club/SCOA Regional Specialty and Supported Entries in Enumclaw, WA. Aug. 17 -20, 2019

Susan McGregor

The West Coast Spinone Club, with the support of SCOA, held Supported Entries with the Rainier Sporting Dog Club Specialties (8/17) and the Olympic Kennel Club All-breed shows (8/19 and 20), and an independent Specialty on 8/18 at the same location. Winners were detailed in the previously submitted report to the committee. Congratulations to the winners!

The show site is a large fairgrounds, and numerous other activities take place at the same time as these shows, including dock diving, barn hunt, agility, and lure coursing. Something for everyone!

We received support from SCOA for the RSDA Supported Entry, and the Specialty, but did not submit a request for SCOA support for the Olympic Kennel Club shows because originally we didn't plan to hold Supported Entries there, as we had missed the deadline to request that. However, when the premiums came out, we were listed as supporting the entry, so we went ahead and club members donated trophies for those shows. (This was likely a residual listing from 2 years ago when we did support those entries.)

We had good entries at all the shows, 20 - 23 each day, including juniors, Obedience, and Rally entries. We hope to increase entries in these events in the future. Several of us camped or set up together on-site, so we're able to gather in the evenings for social gatherings. In addition, we held a BBQ dinner one evening at a club member's home and held a very successful auction. These were well attended and a great time was had by all!

Great weather and good sportsmanship made for an enjoyable weekend for all!   Our Specialty was dedicated to Lea Bishop, a West Coast Spinone Club and SCOA member that we were all missing this year.  We gave each competitor and many observers an etched shot glass filled with Cheetos – to symbolize one of Lea’s favorites, scotch, and Cheetos!

Our trophies were well received.  Rebecca VanEss made or designed our Specialty trophies.  She created leash holders out of vintage rakes and barn wood, decorated with rustic metal Spinone.  She designed etched rocks to be used as doorstops or paperweights.  At the RSDA Sporting Dog Specialty, we gave hunting inspired trophies – beautiful hand-made lanyards, bumpers, and leashes.  At the OKC all-breed shows, we gave an assortment of Spinone and dog-related items one day, and water buckets filled with assorted dog-related items the second day.  Each day class winners received dog toys. When the Specialty weekend was over we sent flowers to thank the person that acted as our ring steward for the second year in a row, despite not even having a Sporting breed.  The funds that SCOA supplied helped us to make this really a quality event.

We enjoyed a BBQ Potluck on Friday night following the Specialty, where Lea’s husband Emerson joined us.

Thank you to SCOA for the support, and all of those that donated to our trophy fund, and those that donated their time, to make this a successful event.

We hope to make this Regional Specialty and Supported Entries an annual event, and are making plans to do so. Thank you to SCOA for providing support for Regional Specialties, and to all that entered and came to Enumclaw to support us.  See you all next year!
