Attention Breeders: Discarded Tissue Needed
Dog Aging Project; Colgate University
From SCOA Health Committee:
To all Spinone breeders who have upcoming litters planned… please get involved in this study if you can? You will need to request a collection kit prior to tail docking, etc. Please contact the researcher (info below) to obtain the kit(s).
I'm a researcher at Colgate University who studies how dogs age. My lab does ongoing work to try to figure out why small dogs live longer than larger dogs, and to do this, we are trying to collect medically discarded tissue from procedures breeders are already doing (for example, tail docks, dewclaws, etc.). There is no compensation aside from the satisfaction of advancing canine knowledge and health. But, you should know that we are very interested in adding your unique breed to our research!
We are only allowed to collect tissue that is removed by a vet or vet tech due to animal care protocols at Colgate University. All you would need to do is shoot me an email whenever you have a new litter whose tails are going to be docked/dewclaws removed and I will send you everything you need to collect these tissues via FedEx. I will also provide a FedEx label for you to send these tissues back to me. We are looking to collect samples from now until August 2026.
